SEAPAX Campout! North Cascades National Park July 14-16

RSVP to campout@seapax.org: The 2017 Annual SEAPAX Campout will be held at the Newhalem Creek Campground in the North Cascades National Park, July 14-16. We have reserved several adjacent individual campsites that should accommodate our group. Details about the campground can be found here. Families and friends are welcome.

In order to plan we need a count of folks who will be joining us. To RSVP or ask questions send a note to campout@seapax.org. There will be opportunities to hike and explore the area on your own or with others.

SEAPAX is subsidizing part of the cost for our camp so we are asking for a contribution of just $5 per person for both nights (what a deal!)   We traditionally have a group potluck on Saturday night, with all other meals being on your own.

Mark this event on your calendar. There will be lots to do and see in this beautiful park. Enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. RSVP today!

A taste of the park can be found in this album.

First Annual Peanut Cookoff

You are invited to a special SEAPAX potluck event on November 13th beginning at 5:30 PM.   We will gather together to celebrate the variety of delicious peanut-based cuisines enjoyed in our many Peace Corps host countries around the world.

The event was conceived as Arlene Mitchell (RPCV Niger) and Mark Hower (RPCV Sierra Leone) began a light-hearted palaver about the merits of their traditional groundnut stew (peanut sauce) recipes derived from their respective West African Peace Corps assignments.  Thus, Arlene and Mark intend to display their culinary skills, and you are invited to enjoy their offerings, contribute your own peanut-based dish, or both!  Or, simply bring a friend and a side dish and come prepared to have a wonderful, filling evening with RPCV friends.

We have been generously invited to use the expansive Interfaith Community Sanctuary of Imam Jamal Rahman, our thoughtful and inspirational speaker at the June Ramadan Break Fast (Iftar) event.  In addition to his work in the Ballard Interfaith Sanctuary, Jamal is famous for his work as a member of the Three Interfaith Amigos.

Here are the logistical details:
Date: November 13th
Time: starts at 5:30 PM
Location: Interfaith Community Sanctuary (Ballard)
1763 NW 62nd Street
Seattle, Washington 98107

Bring your dish ready to eat; please label with ingredients.  There will be rice ready and if a peanut dish is not your forte, salads, fruit and desserts are welcome. We will have kitchen facilities to warm up dishes and/or to refrigerate them.

If you have questions, please contact Mark Hower or call his cell phone at 206-707-4945.

SEAPAX Annual Campout – Grouse Creek

SEAPAX Campout June 24-26

The 7th annual SEAPAX campout is scheduled for June 24-26 at the Grouse Creek Campground, in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

Nestled in a secluded forest setting, this campground is located near the confluence of Grouse Creek and the Chiwawa River, at an elevation of 2,450 feet, and can accommodate up to 50 guests. It is equipped with 3 picnic tables, a large fire pit and campfire rings, and accessible vault toilets, though with no running water.

We have booked the entire group campground for both nights. SEAPAX will subsidize most of the cost of the reservation but asks for adult campers to donate $10 toward the campground fee (cost is for one or both nights).

Activities are being planned, including easy (e.g., Hidden Lake) and more challenging hikes (e.g., Spider Meadow). In addition, Saturday night will be a group dinner effort (last year, our group of 20 people prepared tacos together and had a great meal!). We will need help (contact one of the organizers below) with planning other activities, preparing the menu, shopping for and preparing the Saturday night meal, and organizing carpools.

Directions: from US 2, west- or east-bound, turn north onto WA-207 at Coles Corner and go 4.3 miles. Take a slight right onto Chiwawa Loop Road and go 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Chiwawa River Road/Forest Road 6200 and go 8.1 miles. At the end of the road, take a sharp left onto Forest Road 6200. There is a gated spur road just off the main paved road on the left. The campground is at the end of the road alongside Grouse Creek and is out of sight of the road providing for substantial privacy. Driving time for the approximately 100 mile trip is typically between 2 1/2 and 3 hours.

So, mark your calendar now for outdoor fun! RSVP as soon as possible to either Nikki Eller (nikkimeller@gmail.com) or Scott Ramos (webmaster@seapax.org).
